What is trichology?

‘Trichos’, a Greek word that translates as ‘hair’, with the suffix ‘ology’ put together, is the scientific study relating to scalp and hair health. Trichology, the science of the structure, function, diseases and care of the human hair and scalp, covers the anatomy, chemistry and physiology, as well as nutrition, genetics and microbiology.

Modern trichology was established in England in 1912 as the Institute of Trichologists. It is the oldest professional association for trichologists in the world, the largest provider of trichology training in Europe. At over 100 years old, it is the longest established body of its type anywhere in the world.
